Bagbazar Sarbojanin

One of the oldest community pujas of north Kolkata, known for its unchanged ekchala idol and the adjoining fair on the Ganga bank.

Ekchala idol in the classical north Kolkata idiom

Bagbazar Sarbojanin has been held on the maidan beside Bagbazar Ghat for more than a century, and remains the reference point for what a traditional north Kolkata barowari puja looks like.

The idol follows the ekchala form — Durga and her children set within a single arched frame — painted in the daker saj tradition with silver foil ornamentation prepared by artisans from Kumartuli.

The committee keeps the ritual calendar unusually strict, and the adjoining mela runs from Panchami to Dashami, drawing families from across the northern neighbourhoods.
